Instructions on how to open and edit a note are included at the end of this guide. When you click on a citation in the middle column, choose to show your notes below it. For example, write a note on your progress with a book. 

  1. Open Zotero
  2. Click a collection in the left column
    • Items within the collection will appear in the middle column
  3. Click an item in the middle column
    • Bibliographic information for the item will appear in the right column
  4. Click the Notes tab at the top of the right column
  5. Click Add
    • A word processing screen with text formatting options will open in the right column
  6. Type your note into the textbox
    • The note will save automatically
    • The note will appear below its collection item in the middle column
  7. Click the Related section at the bottom of the word processing screen to add related items to your note
    • A dialog box will open
    1. Click Add
      • The "Select Item's" dialog box will open
    2. Click an item or items to add to your note
      • Related items will be added to your note
  8. Click the Tags section at the bottom of the word processing screen to tag your note
    • A window will open
    1. Click Add
    2. Type the tag into the field
      • The tag will be added to your note
    3. Click outside of the window to close it

To open or edit a note:

  1. Either click the note in the middle column to access it in the right column
  2. Or double click the note in the middle column to access it in a new window
