CAPTCHAs can be used by many websites to prevent abuse from "bots," or automated programs written to generate spam. A CAPTCHA tests whether a user is human by requiring them to read distorted text and then to type it into a specified box. No computer program can read distorted text as well as humans can, so bots cannot navigate sites protected by a CAPTCHA.
