SHANTI is working together with UVa's Arts and Sciences Center for Instructional Technologies (ASCIT) to produce a UVa Language Learning Platform based on the new MIST interface for UVaCollab.
Based upon extensive community consultations with language teachers at UVa, we have identified a range of software functions that we are now implementing in an integrated platform. These tools are being made either directly or indirectly from a UVaCollab site, whether a teacher wants to implement it for a specific course site or as a department-wide resource collaboration site. Contact SHANTI if you would like to start exploring this evolving platform for your Spring 2012 language teaching courses, and/or if you would like to join the corresponding SHANTI Cohort to learn more and participate in testing and decision making for the Spring semester as we build out the remainder of the platform. The areas and tools being explored are discussed immediately below.
This is already implemented and integrated into UVaCollab for the management of audio-video resources.
This is already implemented in the UVa environment for collaborative building of texts, documentation, and guides. We are currently working at integrating it into UVaCollab for delivery in the first quarter of 2012.
This is already implemented and integrated into UVaCollab for online communication and collaboration.
This is for collaborative interlinear commenting on primary source texts. It is currently accessible through UVaCollab.
This is already implemented and integrated into UVaCollab for the easy creation and management of attractive blogs or websites by the instructor or students.
This is already integrated into the UVa digital environment and has a dedicated section on language learning guides and tips, both in general and with new digital technologies. It is currently accessible through UVaCollab.
This UVaCollab tool allows for easy uploading and downloading of PDFs, as well as their description.
We are tentatively exploring Moodle as a more powerful alternative for building traditional test and quiz resources.
We are tentatively exploring Hot Potatoes for the creation of creative language learning exercises and activities.
We are working on final decisions and implementation for the creation of games used to facilitate language learning.
We are tentatively exploring Cramberry as a system for creating rich flash cards to use in aiding with vocabulary acquisition.
We are working on final decisions and implementation for tools allowing students to record and play back their pronunciation as well as to analyze or visualize it in different ways.
We are tentatively exploring LiveMocha as a system to take advantage of social networking in language learning.
