Confluence has been upgraded! is now a read-only repository. It will be permanently decommissioned on December 15, 2019. Visit UVA's new instance of Confluence to create new wikis or modify existing content.

WordPress lets users without programming experience create websites, blogs, and online portfolios.

The user interface is simple, and the site itself is highly customizable through themes   and widgets. UVA maintains its own WordPress server called SHANTI Pages, which is free to the university community through the WordPress tool in UVaCollab. Users can create and manage their own site, which we recommend doing outside of UVaCollab. Previous uses of WordPress at UVA include course sites, personal portfolios, and topical sites.

As of 2/7/18, when you create a WordPress page, members are automatically “Authors”.

If you do not want your students or UVaCollab members to be authors, you must create a group within UVaCollab and use it to manage their role on the WordPress page. Follow the steps here.

Step-by-Step Guides

Set Up Your Site
In order to set up your SHANTI Pages WordPress site, first log into UVaCollab and create a site through that interface using your NetBadge credentials. Once you set up your site, we recommend that you access it via its URL instead of the UVaCollab tool. You may want to take some time to familiarize yourself with the back-end interface of WordPress. The posts that you make or edit will form the body of your site's content. You will compose your posts in a text editor and they will appear on your homepage, defaulting to chronological order. You may classify them using categories and tags to help users sort through a large body of information to find specific topics.
Add Content

You can't change privacy settings for media you upload to WordPress. Once a user adds a file to the Media Library, any other user (regardless of role) can use that file. Media is also accessible to anyone in the world with the URL, and can be indexed by search engines.

We know that restricting media access is important to the UVA community. Our engineers are researching solutions.

WordPress allows you to embed a variety of content, such as hyperlinks, video, audio, and images.

Design Your Site
You can customize the look and feel of your site through themes, which determine colors, interface layout, text styles, line spacing, and so on. Many themes are available as pre-designed and free of charge. We advice that you choose your theme carefully since you can only make limited modifications to your theme after activation.
Add Plugins & Widgets
You may also want to use widgets and plugins to accomplish a variety of tasks. For example, you may add components to your site's user interface, extend the search or sort functionality, embed tables or data, optimize your site's databases, or integrate PDF viewers, video editing tools, social media sites. The UVa Knowledge Base covers a variety of these applications in the WordPress guides.
Manage Users and Privacy
WordPress lets you manage user roles through UVaCollab. You can restrict your site to a private audience or manage viewing. WordPress also welcomes the use of comments, allowing conversations to develop between readers of each post. If you choose to use comments, you will need to ensure compatibility with your theme, and take the necessary steps to prevent spam comments. Once in place, you can allow or disallow comments for specific posts and moderate them on an individual basis through the back-end interface of WordPress.
